Mens Laker Club History

Men’s teams started in 1976-77 at Harbourview School in Dartmouth. The first team was a midget men’s team who finished 2nd at the provincial championships. The team was coached by Tony Hall.

In 1980, the team attended its first Juvenile National Championships in Calgary where it finished 8th of 12 teams.

A second boy’s team started that year at the midget level coached by Ken Bagnell and George Myrer. Players on that team included future coaches Ron Mombourquette and Steve Gallant.

The club expanded greatly in the early 80’s with several midget teams forming and eventually forming a league. At its peak, over 50 midget boys were playing on five different teams across the Halifax region.

At the juvenile level, performances were getting stronger highlighted by a national gold medal in 1984 in Montreal and a bronze medal in 1985.

4th place 1989 Juvenile national
4th place 1994 Juvenile National
2nd place 1986 Midget nationals (I will need to check these 2 out) I am not sure which year.
3rd place 1991 Midget nationals

During the 80’s and 90’s, a close affiliation with Dalhousie formed with many of the top Laker athletes playing key roles on the Tigers successful varsity programs. These include Brian Rourke, Brian Johnstone, Scott Bagnell, Adam Hotchkiss, Scott Townsend, Kirk Yanofsky and Everett Rose.
